HIGH above Berlin

Scenography for Werner Bronkhorst

From 2–4 October, the South African-Australian artist presents HIGH, his first solo exhibition in Berlin and his largest exhibition to date. More than 40 new works are on show at the Atrium Tower at Potsdamer Platz. At the heart of the exhibition is the sky: planes cross vast horizons, hot-air balloons float through sunsets, and skydivers move through open space.

Bronkhorst is known for his highly textured, almost sculptural surfaces, populated by tiny, hyperrealistic figures and objects. Scale shifts, and a single canvas becomes an entire world.

For HIGH, we developed and realised the complete spatial design: scenography, interior design, visitor flow, and branding throughout the interior and exterior spaces.

The artworks themselves were our starting point. Their colours, sense of vastness and constant shifts in perspective continue into the space. Vibrant red meets deep blue; a sunset becomes a spatial atmosphere. Rooms within rooms create new perspectives on the works, while transitional spaces mark moments of passage and intensify the sensation of flight. A consistent visual identity connects the exhibition inside and out.

The result is a space that picks up on Bronkhorst’s visual world and carries it further – while always giving the artworks enough room to make their own impact.

As Bronkhorst describes his new body of work, the world is a canvas. With HIGH, he turns his gaze to the world above us – its ever-changing colours, clouds and possibilities.
