We have won the competition for the realization of an exhibition for the international research facility European XFEL! The European XFEL is the world’s largest X-ray laser – also the world’s brightest light source – and is used by leading research teams from various disciplines from all over the world. We will now design an interactive exhibition of about 350 m² for a newly built visitor and conference centre on the research campus in Schenefeld near Hamburg.
With the X-ray laser, high-frequency detailed images can be taken, e.g. at atomic or cell level, an impressive 27,000 images per second. Using interactive exhibits, original objects and infographics, the exhibition will make the complex functioning of the X-ray laser tangible for the general public, school groups and guests of the research facility. Visitors will gain exciting insights into the interdisciplinary research at the European XFEL, which contributes to solving socially relevant problems – an eventful place of information and learning that arouses enthusiasm for science. At the centre of the presentation will be a scale model of the research facility, which is otherwise largely hidden beneath the earth’s surface. The aspects of laser and speed, future-oriented research and the tunnel-like facility will also be addressed in the design.
The content of the exhibition will be coordinated with that of the planned visitor centre of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchotron DESY. A student laboratory, special exhibitions, events and guided tours of the site complete the information offer of the European XFEL.
