On November 20, the new “Lighthouse” exhibition and conference center on the European XFEL campus made its debut. With 550 m² of exhibition space designed by us, it shines a spotlight on complex science. We’re so proud of the result: the implementation matches our visualizations exactly!
A dark space with illuminated elements and atmospheric lighting creates an immersive environment where science is brought to life in a visually striking way.
At the heart of the exhibition is a walk-through model of the world’s largest X-ray laser, the European XFEL, complemented by interactive exhibits, monitor stations, and large-format graphics. The exhibition space is divided into clear thematic areas, explaining the laser, its functions, and its applications in research and society. The goal is to make this complex technology easy to understand and visually captivating.
The concept engages visitors on three key levels: to Fascinate, to Understand, and to Apply. Playful elements, videos, and interactive stations make it easy for visitors to intuitively explore the scientific content.
The “Lighthouse” also houses conference rooms and the Xcool Lab—a dedicated educational space for students. Funded by the federal and state governments, it conveys the significance of European XFEL’s research to a broad audience. Admission is free, and guided tours and events can be booked online.
Bringing light to the dark winter days!
