Germany’s smartest ship, the MS Wissenschaft, launches into the universe this week. With a dazzling exhibit, Archimedes is part of the great tour. Together with European XFEL we developed an interactive Diamond Anvil Cell.
Our Diamond Anvil Cell is an experimental station to explore the unreachable matter at the core of a planet. In our exhibit, we demonstrate how this examination works. Visitors can test their powers alone or together on a large diamond – and then compare their forces with those of diamonds or elephants.
An original Diamond Anvil Cell and short facts illustrate the connections.
Background information
Extreme conditions prevail inside planets. At high temperatures, density or pressure, matter in the Earth’s core behaves differently than on the Earth’s surface. These extreme conditions can be simulated with a Diamond Anvil Cell.
A sample can be subjected to a pressure of up to 100 billion pascals between the tips of two diamonds – around 100,000 times more than the human finger can generate!
