In November 2024, the new “Lighthouse” exhibition and conference center on the European XFEL campus celebrated its grand opening. Featuring 550 m² of exhibition space, all designed by us, the project brings science to life. We are so proud that the final implementation matches the original visualizations in an exact way.
The purpose-built center, designed by architect David Brückner, also includes conference and event spaces as well as the Xcool Lab — a dedicated laboratory complex for school students. The primary goal of the facility, and the exhibition itself, is to make X-ray light research interactive while showcasing the societal relevance of European XFEL to a broad, international audience.
Unprecedented Dimensions
At 3.4 kilometers in length, European XFEL is the largest research laser in the world. It generates exceptionally intense X-ray laser pulses, enabling researchers to visualize atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and investigate phenomena such as the cores of planets. The exhibition translates these extraordinary dimensions into an accessible and engaging experience. Visitors can learn about the structure, function, and applications of this groundbreaking laser.
A Trip to the Nanoworld
A dark exhibition space illuminated by striking light elements immerses visitors in the fascinating world of X-ray technology. At the heart of the exhibition is a walkable abstraction model of the XFEL facility, serving as the central attraction. Surrounding this model, four interactive stations explain the laser’s technical functionality. Impressive circular structures encase these stations, displaying additional technical information through graphics and monitors.
The surrounding walls take a broader perspective, exploring the laser’s applications in the research world. They delve into methods, impacts, and future visions. Large-scale wall graphics organize the space into distinct thematic areas, incorporating detailed close-up images of the XFEL laser that reveal astonishing insights into the nanoscale world.
Fascinate, Understand, Apply
The educational concept is closely linked to the scenographic design and graphics and is structured into three levels: Fascinate, Understand, Apply. Through numerous interactive exhibits, exciting games, and videos, visitors can gain an accessible understanding of complex technical and scientific contexts and their applications.
Knowledge for Everyone
The project was funded by partner states and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Admission is free, with guided tours and special events for school classes available for online booking in advance.
