For the new Shandong Science & Technology Museum, we developed a comprehensive master plan that replaces the traditional thematic structure of classical museums with an innovative, narrative-driven concept. Guided by the core theme of “Heritage, Enlightenment, Practice,” we lead visitors across an area of several thousand square meters on a journey through human history—from the dawn of civilization to the boldest visions of the future.
Science as an Adventure—The Narrative Milestone Tours
The centerpiece of our design consists of 56 milestones of science and invention. Instead of presenting isolated facts, we utilize interdisciplinary storylines—the so-called “Milestone Tours”—to make complex connections easy to grasp:
From Fireworks to Modernity (Invention of Gunpowder): We tell the story of gunpowder not just as a military revolution, but as humanity’s first major leap into chemistry. The journey leads from its alchemical origins in China to the creation of the Nobel Prizes, and on to modern applications in mining and pyrotechnics.
The Mechanics of the World (Newton’s Laws of Motion): Isaac Newton’s laws become tangible here. We connect his mathematical formulas with natural phenomena like tornadoes and tides, guiding visitors through playful stations such as “Augmented Billiards” all the way to modern rocketry.
Driving the Industry (Invention of the Steam Engine): This tour traces the threads connecting physics, engineering, and economics. It begins with mechanical looms, explains thermodynamics using geysers, and culminates in the rapid development of the Chinese railway network.
The Invisible Force (Ohm’s Law): We take visitors back to the beginnings of electricity, when it was still used purely for party entertainment. From there, we develop the path through the invention of the battery up to high-voltage technologies like Tesla coils and the power grids of the future.
Boundaries of Knowledge (Quantum Theory): Visitors enter the bizarre realm of quantum physics. Through interactive experiments, the tour makes the unimaginable—such as Schrödinger’s cat or wave-particle duality—tangible, while bridging the gap to quantum computers and modern satellite communication.
The Digital Evolution: Additional tours illuminate the invention of cinema as the starting point of mass media, the revolution of the computer from Ada Lovelace to AI, as well as the birth of the World Wide Web and the path toward the cyborg—the fusion of human and machine.
“Enhanced Science Centre” & Immersive Design
Our approach combines the playful interactivity of a modern science center with the intellectual depth of a classic museum. The six exhibition zones follow a clear dramaturgical line, with a design that atmospherically reflects each era—ranging from warm earth tones for the historical beginnings to futuristic, high-tech designs.
Central to this is our multi-local educational approach: Within the individual Milestone Tours, we open up a specific local historical context. By linking complex phenomena with familiar historical or everyday environments, we make the content accessible and relatable, even for audiences without a strong STEM background. This connection to daily life breaks down theoretical barriers and invites visitors to engage, participate, and understand. Through this seamless integration of art and culture into traditional STEM subjects (the STEAM philosophy), we create a holistic educational approach that leaves a lasting inspiration.
