Material Worlds

New Exhibition at Vienna Museum of Science and Technology

This new permanent exhibition spans 3,000 square meters and features 13 themed stations showcasing how a wide range of materials shape our everyday lives — from aluminum, concrete, and plastic to rare earths and steel.

Even though the digital age often feels immaterial, we rely more than ever on a diverse array of materials. Material consumption has never been higher, and materials have never been combined in such creative ways. Whether wood, glass, silicon, or rubber — every material we encounter in daily life has its own unique story. The Material Worlds exhibition brings these stories to life. It invites visitors on a fascinating journey through past, present, and future of the materials that shape our world — offering exciting insights into topics such as resources and raw materials, traditional craftsmanship, advanced technologies, and societal developments.

In a close collaboration with the curatorial team at the museum, we developed ten interactive exhibits. These demonstrate the capabilities of various materials, such as electrical conductivity, elasticity, and strength. Visitors can mix, pull, or crank and are encouraged to make real-world connections to the materials on display. The exhibition offers an interactive experience of diverse materials through the lenses of technology, craftsmanship, and science.

Seemingly ordinary materials like wood or concrete are presented in an aesthetically engaging way, highlighting not only their importance but also raising awareness that some raw materials are not endlessly available.

Through objects, media, and interactive elements, Material Worlds makes it possible to experience what our world is made of. The exhibition is not only scientifically up to date — it’s also a lot of fun!
