Shandong Science & Technology Museum – Preliminary Design

Following the successful master planning phase, we meticulously developed the entire fourth floor of the Shandong Science and Technology Museum, covering approximately 7,900 m² during the “Preliminary Design” phase. This floor represents the thematic climax of the visitor journey, focusing on groundbreaking scientific achievements from the late 19th century through to the technologies of the future.

Interactive Thematic Clusters as Windows to Science
During this phase, pivotal scientific turning points were given spatial and technical form, translating complex theories into tangible experiences:

Physics & the Microcosm: We guide visitors from the discovery of X-rays and radioactivity, through the exploration of the electron, to the very boundaries of human imagination. An immersive tunnel makes the electromagnetic spectrum walkable, while the “Relativity Train” decodes Einstein’s theory of relativity, and kinetic installations demystify quantum mechanics.

Technology & Society: This area highlights the invention of the airplane – from nature’s biomechanics to modern aviation – as well as the invention of moving pictures as the starting point of mass media. It also addresses the chemical revolution sparked by the invention of plastics, along with the associated environmental challenges.

Information & Exploration: We document the journey of the electronic computer from the first circuit diagram to the information age. The grand finale is dedicated to the lunar landing program, where a true-to-scale model of the Shenzhou return capsule brings the pioneering spirit of space travel to life.

Design Language as a Navigation System
The design concept utilizes specific geometries and colors to make the themes intuitively distinguishable:

Organic Curves: Inspired by the design optimism of the 1960s, rounded shapes dominate the areas dedicated to classical modernism, symbolizing the spirit of new beginnings.

Futuristic Hexagons: In the high-tech and future sectors, the hexagonal structure serves as a connecting element between nature and technology, complemented by modern neon accents and traditional Chinese color tones.

Our Services in the Preliminary Design Phase:
Detailed layout and floor planning for 295 individual exhibits. Development of a hierarchical graphics and communication system (A, B, C levels). Technical exhibit planning, including mechanical and digital interaction designs.
Comprehensive lighting and scenography concept to create immersive experiential worlds.
